Due to increased demand in Europe, it was decided that it was time to create another forward-thinking, challenging and exciting renewable energy show, celebrating technologies at the forefront of the transition to a greener, smarter and more decentralized energy system.

See you in Zurich in September 2024, where key stakeholders in the energy value chain will come together with innovators and disruptors to showcase their technology and service solutions needed to enable change in this critical period.

Why now ?

  • Switzerland has the lowest carbon intensity of all IEA countries, thanks to a carbon-free power sector dominated by nuclear and hydroelectric generation.
  • On May 21, 2017, Switzerland voted in favor of the first stage of the Energy Strategy 2050 and adopted the revised Energy Act as proposed by the Swiss Federal Council and Parliament. The revised Energy Act aims to reduce energy consumption, increase energy efficiency and promote renewable energies. In addition, the construction of new nuclear power plants will be banned, meaning that the Swiss energy sector is undergoing a considerable transition. In addition, the revised Energy Act aims to reduce Switzerland’s dependence on imported fossil fuels and strengthen domestic renewable energies.
  • Renewable energies cover 70% of annual energy demand.
  • Today in Switzerland, around 53% of electricity is generated by fully renewable hydroelectric power plants, 36% by nuclear power plants (with an average heat-to-electricity efficiency of 25%), and the remaining 11% is obtained from biofuels (<5.7%), waste incineration (<2.7%), photovoltaic panels and wind turbines. As a result, electricity generation in Switzerland is virtually CO2-free.
  • The energy transition is currently being implemented in Switzerland as part of the 2050 energy strategy, with the aim of achieving climate neutrality. Only 4 of Switzerland’s 5 nuclear power plants have been in operation since 2020, and the share of renewable energies in total final energy consumption has risen to around 28% by 2021.
  • Switzerland still has largely untapped photovoltaic potential in already built-up areas. An economic optimum could be achieved if less than two out of three roofs are covered. The next step is to determine which roofs are most suitable.
  • The Swiss government intends to continue promoting hydropower, in particular by supporting the renovation and expansion of existing power plants to increase their efficiency. However, the construction of new hydropower plants is unlikely, given the current number of existing plants, restrictions imposed by environmental laws, nature and landscape protection regulations, and other factors.
  • The government has also said it wants to increase solar power by making investments in photovoltaic systems tax-deductible for renovations and new buildings, while simplifying the approval process for installing solar panels not only on roofs, but also on facades.
  • Another measure is to replace traditional household electricity meters with smart meters.  The more accurate data will improve supply efficiency and save electricity. Regulations on CO2 emissions from new cars will be stricter and more extensive. From 2021, passenger cars will be allowed to emit an average of just 95g CO2/km across the entire new car fleet, around a quarter less than today.
  • Solar photovoltaics are expected to continue to dominate the Swiss electricity market in terms of cumulative installed capacity, even by the end of 2030. Photovoltaic solar power accounted for the dominant share of Switzerland’s total installed renewable energy capacity. This share is set to increase further by 2030.
  • Electricity production in the solar energy market is expected to reach 2.00 billion KWh in 2023.
  • The solar energy market in Switzerland is expected to grow by 2.02% (2023-2028) to reach a volume of 2.21 billion KWh in 2028.
